Job Jumping

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

As I look through my CV (resume) I find a funny coincidence. Every March through May I'm getting a new job and I never planned it this way. When I first moved to UAE I was pregnant and about May I couldn't handle working anymore. Magrudy's laid off dozens and dozens of staff in March last year. And now this year, my job environment at an English language institute I was working at became unbearable. Literally having to beg and plead just to get my hard earned salary.
No, I don't think so. Allah didn't create me to have to beg for my sustenance when I'm already working hard. If I want to be a beggar I'll go sit on the streets. The staff are all miserable and making drama and even the Director ran away. So I did too.

My parents were planned to come in the end of March so this was the perfect time to switch jobs as I needed a mini vacation. Now financially it's not been easy but I've managed to break all ties with my former company and switch to a new and much better institution for English teaching. But the classes cancel easily and they aren't loading me up so it's difficult.

But YAY my parents did arrive and it's so nice to have time with them! I haven't seen them for 6 years and it's just amazing to see how they've changed and for them to see how much I've changed and my family. Really I could write a whole blog post about their visit and probably will later when i have more time.

ALSO on the horizon I have the chance again to become a designer. The CEO of a design company took interest in my art and is challenging me to show him new work and designs. He is very exacting about quality and basically wants a 3DMAX quality HAND DRAWING. Not easy. My first design was 60% of 100%. My next attempt was 85%. I'm hoping the one I'm working on now will reach 100%. INsha'Allah.

So I'm putting my whole effort into being a designer which is my dream and getting out of the teaching field for now. I'll always love teaching but design is my blood and soul. If he decides he doesn't want me for his company there are thousands more out there or maybe I could start my own..... hmm this is Dubai, where dream can come true with the right connection.

Yalla off to work!

Ridding Ghosts?

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

Long ago before I was Muslim I used to dabble a bit in Witchcraft with some of my friends.

My family and I moved in with my grandfather and I temporarily got to have the library as my room. There was nothing better than waking to a room stuffed with books everyday. But I had a lot of nightmares and scary feelings always in that room. Sometimes I'd wake up screaming. A few times I'd wake trying to scream but nothing would come out. Those were the worst.

Finally I was moved down the hall to the former office room (which used to belong to my Aunt when she was younger). It felt very peaceful and wonderful. I painted it a beautiful color of blue called Blue Flame with African Jewel Lavender trims. Pure relaxation. But when I'd walk down the long hall towards the green bathroom at the end, I'd have to pass the Library. A sudden dread out of nowhere would fill me and my hair would raise off my skin and I would get so scared and creeped out. If other people were around this wouldn't happen. If someone was sitting in there reading or something I never felt it. Only when it was empty.
Many nights I refused to go to the bathroom so I wouldn't have to pass that room. If the door was closed I didn't feel it, only when it was open and my family had a habit of leaving it open a crack at night.
When I badly had to go I'd creep slowly down the hall and glide along the wall furthest from the door until I could see if it was closed or not. Many nights that inky black crack glared out at me filling me with unknown dread. I do have an active imagination but this was different, I wasn't trying to imagine anything. I was purposely trying to clear my mind to enhance reality but it wouldn't help. There was something evil in that room.
I'd take a few breaths to steel myself then reach my hand closer and closer to the doorknob to pull it shut. Every inch seemed to be wanting me to be sucked back into that land of nightmares. Finally I'd manage to touch the cool knob and firmly shut it. But I could still feel it seething behind the door. I would quickly go to the bathroom then rush back to my peaceful room to sleep.
Eventually my Maternal Grandmother's health was deteriorating and it was decided she would move into my Paternal Grandfather's house with us. They emptied the floor of the Library to prepare for her to move in. I was horrified. I went to my favorite Wiccan (witchcraft) sites and was madly browsing how to rid the room of evil spirits. Finding the perfect solution I rummaged my room for the previous Halloween's 2 black tapered candles as the spell required. I knew they would come in handy when I bought them on a whim.

My family had gone out shopping to get her furniture then to pick her up. I entered the Library filled with sunlight but still felt the gloom of evil hanging around. I did not want that thing to effect my grandmother's health and give her nightmares too. I placed the two candles on both sides of the room and then lit them. I recited the opening spell and began to speak directly to the unwanted spirit.
I informed it as the spell required that it was no longer allowed to live here and had permission to leave and was banned from returning. (The spell said it more eloquently but I've forgotten the words now --alhamdulillah--). Then i finished the incantations and brought the lit candles together in the center of the room and on the last word of the spell blew them out together. I used my Gift for Feeling to test the room. It had gone. The spell had said either the spirit would leave the house through the walls out into the world to find another home or it would have been sucked into the candles and would remain therein until they were lit again. I felt the far wall and didn't feel anything odd. I picked up the candles and they seemed heavier than before. I felt a shudder holding them. I threw them on a shelf out of sight.
But it had seemed to work, the room felt happy and clear again. When my family returned and set up the room for my grandmother I was satisfied her health would not be effected by the room ever again.
The next day I took the candles to school in my backpack and showed them to my friends and explained SHORTLY what I had done. Jen (over at A Day in the Life of a Struggling Artist) said she'd take them. I warned her though never to lite them. Years later she said she did so I don't know what happened with that. Perhaps she can finish the tale for us here in comments...

Now I'm Muslim it's hard to know what to think about that. Was it a bad Jinn? Had it really left through the magic I had used? We Muslims do believe Magic exists but we are forbidden from using it and dealing with those who do as All Power comes from Allah. Many times after this I tried at night to go past the library and use my Gift of Feeling to test it but nothing ever felt bad again. I even tried imagining it but it didn't work.

Later when I met my Muslim Roommate and we were about to move into a new apartment she said she had learned we read certain ayahs from the Qur'an to protect the home from Jinn. We had her ex-husband come over and read the proper verses since we both weren't well versed in Qur'an. Also when I Feel something odd I always recite Qur'an now. If I wake from a bad dream I do the same. Oddly enough sometimes in my dreams I'm battling evil forces by loudly reciting qur'an and they are always shrinking back from the power of it and I wake feeling invigorated.
*UPDATE* -Jen finished the story of the Black Candles in the comments so check it out!!!

Have you ever experienced something like this? Let us know either through comments or link me on your blog.

Baby Boy Dreams

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

This dream I just had during a nap was weird and funny. Had to share...
I can't remember the very beginning...
_________________________
There was a war happening very close front lines style. Guns going off people being slaughtered in ditches and I clung to my two kids and moved around them angry at the stupidity of this war. Making my children forced to climb over dead bodies. "Enough, we're going to Canada."
I said to the kids. So we take this underground tunnel that the African people were using in the war to flee and follow it too. I was heavy pregnant so it was struggle to carry both children as they fell asleep. The whole time I was walking I dreamed of the beautiful peaceful proper Islamic Islamic school I would finds when i get there to put my kids in. This bolstered me to keep moving.
When I got to Canada I headed straight for the hospital. I checked myself in for delivery arranged my sleeping children on the top half of the bed while I (apparently quietly) delivered my new baby. After having the baby who was in the nursery I was watching the people around me talking, none wearing hijab. Many of them were in casts and were fighting about things in this life. One family caught my attention they were always arguing loudly and all of them were in full body casts except their heads. I checked my e-mail in my impatience and found an E-mail from Safiyyah (Saf) saying she made it to Canada in time to give birth to her son and she was in the hospital now. She mentioned a room with people in a cast and fighting disturbing her baby. I had a hunch she was so close to me but she didn't know I was there so I e-mailed her telling her so. She wrote back that yes that was her room number and so I went over to visit her. In the midst of the crowded fighting room Saf lay there in serene peace in full hijab holding her baby boy. We hugged each other fiercely glad to escaped the war. Then i had to leave. I took my children tot eh Islamic school and when i got there, my brother-in-law's wife was there holding a new baby too, a beautiful baby boy with large lashy brown eyes. He was sooo sweet I cuddled him and then said goodbyes. I left my kids at the school and then took my newborn back tot he hospital under the guise of needed to check my birthing stitches but when the nurse turned her back I took my son back to Saf's room. I just had to see her in her serenity of Islamic Peace again. We set our new babies together and chatted easily.

_____________________________

I woke up.

I have the tendency to dream about what I'm thinking very long about during the day and was thinking a lot of Saf and the IWA story and everything like that so I understand why she was in the dream but what was with the babies everywhere? Is there a meaning of this that has a different interpretation? My mother in law once said a baby boy meant delivery of a new fortune is expected. Ok perhaps... but what was with Canada!?!?! And the war? It was such an interesting thing to dream about...

I call myself a Writer. Yet I have not yet told how this came to be.

Perhaps we should first look at my childhood. Since I was young I was good at telling stories. My biological mother always would say "Brandy tell me a story." Later as I grew up to around 6 or 7 I saw many Shrinks and Social Workers and I was always Narrating my past so they could analyze me. In Kindergarten I was just learning to read things and in the foster home that taught me to read one of the younger boys made fun of me that he could read before me. This fulled my rage to be better than him and so I read like crazy. In 1st grade I was reading so well that they moved me up to the 3rd grade reading hour (where I'd go to 3rd grade just to read books with them for an hour). In the 3rd grade class I had so much fun and I felt so special being advanced. Also the smartest boy in that class was tripping over a new "hard word LIGHTENING" and I was so tempted to say it out loud to help him but I held my tongue wiggling in my chair saying it over and over in my head. Finally the teacher corrected him and moved on and I never had the chance to show my brilliancy. I was disappointed but still elated I knew more than the smartest boy of 3rd grade. Once I started living with my father and my new mom they encouraged me all the time to read and I did voraciously. All my tests showed I had advanced reading and comprehension skills many grade levels higher than I was in, consistently through the years. I used to spend summers reading book after book eating ice pops curled up with my cat. Also playing pretend with my childhood best friend all the way until the middle of high school led me to enjoy the world of imagination.
In school plays, because of my advanced reading levels, I always got the part of the Narrator because I could easily read quickly and memorize the many lines. It was my inner joy that I was still "the best" at reading. My 5th grade teacher, the wonderful Mr. Vasquez, used to read to us out loud in class and it would send me into the enchantment of books to the point I'd wait eagerly for the reading hour and when it ended I wished I could take his book and finish it off myself. I also by this time had made a few simple poetry books and the teachers had applauded them thoroughly.
Middle School taught me further the power of words and writing. One of the teachers read the first book of Narnia out loud. Another book he read out loud enchanted me to the point where when reading of drunkenness you could almost feel yourself sloshing sideways out the door to the next class. Words held power. I was still writing poetry here and there and practicing my use of imagery with just the right word well placed. In 8th grade our teacher gave us an assignment to write an actual long story. My mind was racing! Oh the plots to make! It was fabulous fun. I wrote a Science Fiction booked called "Journey to Pluto". Basing the characters mostly off of my real life friends. A Book I'm still polishing to publish to this day (it's there in a file!) But I made a short version and gave it to the teacher and she liked it very much.
More importantly though my parents showed it to my Aunt who is into writing and publishing and I had no idea we had so much in common. As we edited the story to make it longer I fell in love with the writing process. I was having fun with this. Also I continued to write poetry to the point when we'd eat out with my grandparents nightly I'd write out a new poem on the napkins and spend the evening trying to find that perfect word and driving my whole family insane trying to capture a feeling with only one word. Eventually my parents gave up and bought me a thesaurus.
Sadly shortly there-after my paternal Grandmother's health was quickly deteriorating. She was placed on Hospice Program and I read literature and pamphlets on how to deal with death. One pamphlet said to let the person know you love them. So one night I went to my grandmother's room and held her sleeping hand while Beethoven's Fur Elise played in the background and finally she woke and I told her how much I loved her and she assured me how much she loved me. That night I was feeling so emotional about it all I wrote the entire experience down and sent it to my mom through the post office since at that time I didn't feel comfortable enough to hand it to her. She saved that letter unbeknown to me at the time.
Later, when my Grandmother died, at her funeral everyone told special things about her. I was too shy to stand up in front of everyone though I had so much to say. My mom though stood and read my letter out loud to everyone. I felt better. As we were walking to leave the cemetery my Dad's Step-sister told me she loved my letter. His other Step-sister came up then too and said "Wow that was powerful. You know you should be a writer!" I was really stunned by the compliments. I know it was heartfelt but 'powerful!?' Me? A writer? Could I be? Am I? Is this where I belong? Is this what I can become? More family members complimented me and a dayIi expected to be so sad turned into something amazing. The beginning of my dream to become a writer. From that moment on I was insatiable in my quest to read more challenging books and each summer I took a classic author in Science Fiction and read all their books. One summer Alan Dean Foster, Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, the entire Star Wars novels series. I also inherited my grandmother's Romance Novels and there were hundreds.
I couldn't get enough of reading. It's all I wanted to do. I let homework and school slack as I finished that last page of a great novel. I lived my life in imaginations and fantasy. While I moved around in the physical world my mind was always dual mode in an imagination. I was the Queen of Europe gliding gracefully toward the evening supper and later the grand ball as in real life I went to my next class and to the cafeteria. People around me were just extras on my personal set. Instead of doing homework at night I'd spend hours and hours acting out my personal imaginations when I wasn't in a book, like being a famous "Riverdancer" as I danced to my Celtic Music in circles in my room. Being an only child ensured I wasn't interrupted or bothered.

But the best of all during these High School Years was writing novels. Instead of listening to a history lesson I'd be writing the 7th Chapter to my latest novel. Two weeks later I'd have a new idea and relate to my friends the new plot. Sometimes during lunch I'd get them to chime in on plot ideas. My closest friends can attest to my obsession. Sure I flunked a few classes but it was worth it at the time to finish that part of the book. Plus there was always Summer School. By the time I finished 12th grade I had 20 yes TWENTY unfinished books in various stages of completion. Yes I am a procrastinator with Attention Deficit Disorder. But I'm a writer!

So as I met my future husband and had to deal with a suddenly difficult life. My solace was writing and reading. I read so many books while unemployed that I could predict (correctly) the entire plot by the end of the first chapter. It got so bad I lost the interest to read and write anymore. I couldn't enjoy the books when I could predict it all. Just then luckily I was too busy working at the movie theater to worry about time to read. But for me Movies are like Books with free pictures. I even used to ditch school on Fridays to catch the latest Picture Book ;) that was released. I never stopped having my dual reality of imaginations during real life but it got harder and harder to find the right plots to match my life. I made a rule though that no matter how difficult Praying 5 times a day got for me I'd never "pretend" to Pray or be a Muslim Character. Islam is always been the one thing I don't use in imagining. Because Allah is real and Islam is not something to play with.
After I got married and moved to Lebanon I spent much of my time cooped up with myself as is my habit and made more imaginings and I had suddenly a lot of free time to write but social obligations to hang out with the family caused me strife with time management. Until my younger sister in law H, showed an interest in my stories and in making her own poems and story ideas. Such a special bond we share. She was my happiness in those early days when few spoke English and understood my aloofness. Now I'm able to share books and stories with her easily and she's my sounding board for everything I write. When I had the idea to write with Arab characters for the first time she was right there helping me with names and themes. To her I owe much. While pregnant with my daughter I had ages of free time to write and finally I finished my rough draft to my book I'd been working on since high school. I finally got to write "THE END". It's been 4.6 years since I wrote THE END and still haven't had time to finish typing it into the computer and getting it polished to send off and of course it's a Romance Novel so it's unIslamic and I have that whole debate still going in my head of if I morally SHOULD send it off...
Now I have over 50 books in various stages of writing (one completed!) about 12 of those Islamic, and I've made my dream to be a Writer. This was how I got to this point of finally opening a blog to find people "just like me". Muslims who Dream to Write.

Dreams: The Scottish Man and Julia Roberts

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

I have such memorable and vivid dreams and I usually remeber them. I'd like to share some now and then and give someone else something interesting to think about that is probably really weird hehehe.

The first dream:

My husband and I (looking and talking like Julia Roberts) were having some troubles and he said he had to leave on a business trip for a while.. I said fine! SO he left and went to this snowy and icy country and when he stepped off the boat he carefully guided his second wife (who looked and acted like JLo -Jennifer Lopez) off. SHe shivered and wished to be back on the sandy beaches where it was warm. "I'm not from this setting, I don't like it, it makes me feel weak!" she murmered gently to her husband. "I know but we only have to visit my family for a short while then we'll go back home. I want them to meet you. They've never met my wife."

"WHat about your first wife?" She asked surprised. "No, she's to loud and outgoing, they'd never accept her. I can't take her here. Only you." He replied. SO they go meet the in-laws (NOT looking like MY in-laws let me add!) of a mother, grandmother, and an aunt. ALl of them look alike with medium brown skin, bobbed black hair that was comically poofed up like a mushroom, and nasty twisted faces. "Pleasure to meet you" the mother said as she layed out her tarot cards and began to call upon the jinn. "Pleasure to meet you." The grandmother said and began blowing on knots and sticks casting evil spells against JLo. "Pleasure to meet you" said the Aunt and began reciting evil chants under her breath. After a day JLo succumbed to a fever and illness that no one could explain though my husband brought doctors from afar. Finally he had to take her back to my houe for me to nurse her to wellness. The problem was the three in-laws followed us there and continued their sorcery against my co-wife. (remember I'm looking like Julia Roberts) I got all up in their faces when I saw what they were doing. I called them on it and was shouting and cursing and yelling at them and they were sooo shocked that they remained quiet for once. They took offense and then tried to harm me with their evilness but I wasn't having any of that and told them off again and literally threw them from my house. Instantly Jlo got better and thanksed me profusely. My husband was soo happy that she was better and that I had saved her.

I woke from that going...what was THAT ABOUT! WHy the celebrity cameos? I haven't been reading entertainment gossip for a LOONG TIME.

Second Dream:

A sterotypical Scottish man (I am part scottish) had 4 wives:

A Spanish Woman (sterotyped):

A Dutch Woman (sterotyped):

Julia Roberts (again played by me):

and a quiet mousy girl who looked like Emily Dickenson:
The fourth wife (me, Julia Roberts) had just joined the mix and was learning how to co-exist in the same castle as the others. Each of us had a wing to ourselves. But they liked to get together and put make-up on together and do each other's hair and have he kids running amuck between themselves. I felt really out of place and was like IS this normal? But they swept me up into it. Our Scottish "Lord of the manor" came booming in and sat heavily in the middle of the women and they fussed about him and his kids rushed talking at once but he jovilly held up his hand for silence and they all shrunk back. He called for me and told me to come rub his feet (we hadn't even consumated the marriage yet!) and the spanish woman snickered and tossing me a knowing look like "have fun". He kicked off his boots and sterotypical dirty smelly feet came popping out. I grimaced and did as I was told. He relaxed contended and then let everyone tell him the news of the day. Then finally after al the gossip he turns to me,
"How was your day?"
"I want a divorce." I say abruptly. Everyone looks at me shocked. Now this scottish guy may have been brutish to look at but he's a big softy sweetheart. He took my smeelly hands (from his feet) and held them in his, "But I love you and I give you everything."
"But this is so weird. I don't think i can live liek this."
"Oh she's rattling her bones, we will take good care of her." The dutch woman spoke.
"I wont keep you if that's what you wish." SO he let me go and I married my cousin (a real cousin, that was the creepy part of the dream) but I missed the scottish man and his ladies. SO I divorced my cousin (without having conumated again --thank God or else this would be a nightmare) and re-married the scottish man and his ladies. And lived happily within their mix.
Sooo I'm thinking a lot of this has to do with all these Poly blogs out there LOL. Maybe I have been reading them waaay too much. Obviously the dutch woman came from a blog i read from Holland. But what's up with this Julis ROberts theme?!? So that's why I named my new hamster Julie. If my husband can have Angelina I can have Julie ;) The characters were so vivid and funny I woke up laughing. The scottish man was too funny! Maybe because my g-pa went and visited Scotland recently so it was on my brain or who else would own a castle for his wives? I don't know. It was jsut weird but fun. I did tell my husband about these dreams and of course he liked the Julia/JLo one and just raised his brows about he Scottish Man and didn't say anything. HAHAHA! Dreams are amazing....
