Job Jumping

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

As I look through my CV (resume) I find a funny coincidence. Every March through May I'm getting a new job and I never planned it this way. When I first moved to UAE I was pregnant and about May I couldn't handle working anymore. Magrudy's laid off dozens and dozens of staff in March last year. And now this year, my job environment at an English language institute I was working at became unbearable. Literally having to beg and plead just to get my hard earned salary.
No, I don't think so. Allah didn't create me to have to beg for my sustenance when I'm already working hard. If I want to be a beggar I'll go sit on the streets. The staff are all miserable and making drama and even the Director ran away. So I did too.

My parents were planned to come in the end of March so this was the perfect time to switch jobs as I needed a mini vacation. Now financially it's not been easy but I've managed to break all ties with my former company and switch to a new and much better institution for English teaching. But the classes cancel easily and they aren't loading me up so it's difficult.

But YAY my parents did arrive and it's so nice to have time with them! I haven't seen them for 6 years and it's just amazing to see how they've changed and for them to see how much I've changed and my family. Really I could write a whole blog post about their visit and probably will later when i have more time.

ALSO on the horizon I have the chance again to become a designer. The CEO of a design company took interest in my art and is challenging me to show him new work and designs. He is very exacting about quality and basically wants a 3DMAX quality HAND DRAWING. Not easy. My first design was 60% of 100%. My next attempt was 85%. I'm hoping the one I'm working on now will reach 100%. INsha'Allah.

So I'm putting my whole effort into being a designer which is my dream and getting out of the teaching field for now. I'll always love teaching but design is my blood and soul. If he decides he doesn't want me for his company there are thousands more out there or maybe I could start my own..... hmm this is Dubai, where dream can come true with the right connection.

Yalla off to work!

6 Week Plan

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

So I read this Awesome Book! "The Illustrated Pratical Encyclopedia of FITNESS TRAINING" by Andy Wadsworth

Very very excellent book. Really taught me where I've been going wrong in my previous workout attempts. Now I have a new Fitness Workout Plan for the next 6 weeks. Grueling of course.
And I've been working on my eating plan, made myself a comprehensive healthy eating plan.
Instead of making a specific food for each meal I put the things I can have at that meal time and how many servings of each kind so I can make an informed decision even when I don't have a specific food on hand. (common in my house).

Also working on resisting again my "happy" foods. My sugar-drug. OMG DID YOU SEE THEY CAME OUT WITH COCONUT M&MS!!!! I LOOOOOOVE COCONUT AND CHOCOLATE COMBO......
*ahem* yes as I was saying..... RESISTING!!!!  Like last night went with my kids to the park (at 11pm) and on the way we stopped for gas and "snacks" I told them before we went in Healthy snacks only.
OH MY GOODNESS trying to find a healthy snack in a convienience store was like a needle in a haystack. Sure they had fruits, like a pre-packaged Banana and an apple but my kids were not gonna be fooled into thinking that is a snack for parks. and I didn't want to deal with the sticky hands from the juice.  My son started out looking at the marshmellows and I firmly said no, put it back. Then my daughter saw Gummy Cherries, "Look Mommy, your favorite!"  No NO! Put them back!
Then I saw JELLY BEANS!!!! OHHHH I LOVE JELLY BEANS!!!! I was like ok just one bag.... I held onto them as I strolled around. We got to the cookie and cracker aisle. I started checking every package for Carb and sugar counts.... OH the HORROR of high carb counts! 60carbs per serving in most if not more! THen I looked at the back of the Jelly Beans.....WAY more than 60! Stupid me why did I even pick them up...old bad habits! I tossed them aside and finally settled on TUC crackers and SKYLINE crackers. Meanwhile both kids were literally crying and screaming everytime they brought me something sugary and I said No. But their tears just confirmed to me how badly we are all getting sucked into the unhealthy trap.
We made it to the Check-out with only the crackers where COCONUT M&MS assaulted my mind.
I even got sucked into thoughts of "health Bars" with rediculously high carb and sugar counts....which made me put it back....and then on the way out CHEX Trail Mixes in multi-tempting-flavors. I checked the carb counts and was like ummmm not bad carb count until i saw the serving size and servings per bag.. 7-10 servings each bag. So multiply 72 carbs by 7.  342 calories by 10...yeah no thanks......
we got in the car and realized we had forgotten water...but i was NOT going back in there.

Any of that junk at the park wouldn't have lasted more than 5 minutes, ten max, but those two small packs of crackers lasted the three of us 50 minutes. pretty good! We even found a vending machine at Safa Park (which closes at 11:30pm so we got in free) and I thought the kids would beg for soda but lo and behold they lvoed healthier and begged for water!  YAY!!! Small steps!

It was amazing reading a Weight-Loss Blog "Escape from Obesity" about the brains pathways in habits. Very interesting! Go check it out!

So the last week I spent writing down my plan and fine-tuning everything and prepping myself to resist junks so that on Saturday I can start the workout part.  Yay!  They also have a nice spongy jogging path around the park I'm thinking to use for Rollerblading by myself. Weeee!!!!!

Ah and of course Homeschooling and Work and everything is going on track too!  :D

Thanks for all your support and comments the last post :)

Magrudy's City Center and Dubai Mall branches have closed. Which would leave me where?

Was given my 30 day notice and working Ibn Battuta Mall's Branch until it end March 3rd, is where. I'm on borrowed time to find another job to support me and my kids.
But I saw it coming and made Dua for a chance at something new, and thus here it is, and I'm not sure what to do about it.
I'm applying my CV/Resume everywhere I think will likely work....

But there are the dreams and that niggling little voice who is never wrong and she knows it too.

They are telling me it's time to put words into action and do something to start the fulfillment of my Destiny. I've been talking about it to close family and friends for over a month now and even worked up enough courage to hint about it on my blog but you never can get anything started until you take a deep breath and risk it all.

You see I was afraid. I was afraid If I went and told you all my plans then there would be criticism, there would be discouragement, there would people that *gasp* expected me to live up to my declaration. I didn't want that pressure for something so precious to me. But then on the flip side of the coin you have encouragement, support and *gasp* someone who might read about it and hook you up!

So the time has come....

No wait, I need another moment to get this lump in the back of my throat down my suddenly parched esophagus.....

......

....

...

..

.

*gulp*

.

..

...

....

......

Ah, there we go, moving on.....

I'm going to build a Masjid (Mosque) / Islamic Community Center.

BUT

it will NOT be like any other masjid/ICC out there currently.
It will be insha'Allah the pure essence of Islam.
I want people to walk into there and breathe deeply and go "Yes, this is Islam".

It will have many features that are Humanitarian.
A new way never done in UAE to feed the Poor.
A way to shelter the victims of Violent acts.
A way to keep families together and solve marital conflict.
Bringing Dawa' to non-Muslims on a whole new level.
Learning the beauty of Islam for anyone in society.
A way to receive discounted healthcare.
A fun place to mind the children while their parents learn or pray.
A it will feature many attractions to bring people to the masjid 24 hours a day.
Yes 24 hours a day. A masjid should never be closed to shut out Allah's Mercy.

I've been working and designing and researching these past few months how to make it all work and come together.
Now I'm going to be approaching investors to join in. It's a big step to take but insha'Allah it will come together and I will find someone with the right Vision to understand how this will all work out.

I will build this brick by brick if I have to, but it will be done.

I had other plans yes that haven't worked out so far but none of them have I felt so strongly about than this one. I know this is what Allah wants me to work on, and I'm ready for it. None of my other plans and ideas had a good purpose you see. It was a plan to mostly help me. It would be MY Business. Now I'm making something for Others. It will be YOUR MASJID. For Allah. To WORSHIP HIM.

I beg Allah to make me His tool for goodness in this life and this project will be just that, a tool to spread the Mercy of Allah.

So now I have to figure out a way to make this happen, while still providing for my family on a daily basis.
I'll be updating you all on updates for how it's coming along and when I get a website for it.

Until then I only ask for your Dua that this comes true and will benefit those who really need it.

"Drop and Give me Twenty"

"You call yourself a soldier or a $#%^*!"
"My Grandma can run faster than your sorry *$#%!"

Ahh the joys of Military Boot Camp. For some it sounds like an alternative form of torture, for others, sounds like fun. The one thing it does though is teach you discipline and whips you into shape.

How many workout videos do you own? Seriously think about it. How many of them do you watch and use? Manic instructors grinning hardly breaking a sweat as perfect people jump to the beat in a rhythm you just can't seem to follow. Something about Eye-TV-Workout coordination doesn't agree with you?

Now I've done some research and have found actual civilian Boot Camp courses (less intense than military) that you can do in a group. Sounds pretty cool BUT as Muslims the exercising in public with whole hijab garb on (proper I'm talking about not skin tight stuff), it's just not gonna fly. Besides I'm way out here in UAE and all these courses are in "Western Civilization". Although I came across this interesting article about Military Wives going through boot camp:  Civilian Boot CAMP

And more fun and interesting fact about Military Boot Camp, some that make you long for it and others that make you wanna go run and hide behind your mama's skirts. About.com US Military

So what does this have do with an American Muslima Writer & Blogger? I found myself a FREE Boot Camp training course I can do in the comfort of my home for the next 8 weeks! Ok I don't have any drill sergeant shouting in my ear but being the Imaginative Role Player type I am, I fully plan to take on that role and yell at myself. So for the next 8 weeks I will be trying hard to not make excuses and just suck it up and get it done. Come on you can survive almost anything for 8 weeks. Although I'd love to take on a real military course much as G.I. Jane does in her awesome Movie that inspired this Life Move, I can't. Although I actually in high school was eager to join the Navy or Army or well any branch that deemed me suitable (Although the Navy had a nice ring to it ... Admiral Chase is better than General Chase) but alas life took a different direction that I am happy with BUT still sometimes those camouflage color beckon me.

So here I am starting Week 1 today! If anyone wants to join me and kick start their weight loss or fitness project or get through one of those plateaus we always get stuck on this is the thing to try! I'll keep you posted about results :D and for those curious, if it makes me vomit or not like real Military boot camps....

TRY IT HERE:
FREE BOOT CAMP

By the way since it seems overwhelming to follow(ONLINE) I actually went and printed myself out a calendar for each week's exercises and then a daily list so I wouldn't have to stare at the screen. I gave myself this whole week to prepare to start this. And alhamdulillah it helped to have the extra time.

So "Hooah!" Onto Being Healthy!

So this is what's been on my mind for the past month, erm you people did miss me right? I could tell by the lack of comments how much i was missed ;)
But it didn't hurt really to be forgotten in blogworld because I hadn't really been on blogger to do more than check comments (lotta spam whats up with that!!!) and see if my best buds had posted anything.
But I have been on the Computer almost 24/7 the last few months.  Imediatly after NaNoWriMo in November ended (whew!) I completly ignored my story and turned to business.

I have been seraching for the perfect business project for ages now.  It's always been a toss up between Interior Designing, Landscape Designing, or actaully I can't remeber half the ideas that used to float in my head anymore. But everytime I made istikhara for it things would seem to go in the rigth direction but just "put on hold for now" and evertime this happened something else would enter my mind as soemthing better to do. Well after Nano I was really cracking down on figuring out if I wanted to do Interior Designing Firm.  But meanwhile in the Islamic Writers Alliance (IWA) message boards I was absolutly happiest when dealing with IWA matters and talking with people in this industry.  My heart longed to do soemthing meaningful with Books and Literacy.
After sending a hesitant question in my discussions with an American Muslim Publisher and hearing her enthusiastic response it was solidified in my heart.

I NEED TO OPEN A BOOKSTORE!!!! An ISLAMIC bookstore.  There are PLENTY of bookstores here catered to the masses of secularism.  AND although I enjoy Harry Potter and even Twilight as much as the next Fiction enthusiest, the community needs more. MUSLIMS need more.  We need our own chain of bookstores promoting Islamic Fiction and Islamic Written works, writen of course by our fellow Brothers and SIsters.  If that is not supporting the Ummah I don't know what is.  These writers spend years working on their books to only get them sold perhaps half MAXIMUM to 1/5 the amount as say Harry Potter. YET HOW MANY MUSLIMS ARE IN THE WORLD!?!?!?! 1/5 of the world is MUSLIM! HELLO MUSLIMS! Wake up and realize we have quality books of our own that are just as entertaining as Harry Potter.
SO upon realizing what I really want to do most is a Bookstore I immediatly set up work to make out a Business Plan.  WHEW what work are they!
Meantime though I still gotta keep up the house, kjeep off the weight, Homeschool, help friends, etc.... so that is why the month is now almost over and I haven't had time for blogging and haven't even finished my Business Plan.  But yesterday I got a lot of free time in so I worked hard and got a lot of good statistical figures about the industry and demographics of UAE.

I really feel the hardest part is the Business Plan. Getting it right and making it work and doing all the research.  Finding an investor i believe will happen with the Grace of Allah. He will either send me one or not. End of Story.

SO my store is thus titled so far Crescent Pen Bookstore & Cafe. Whatcha think?
I may have a logo contest in the future so stay tuned.
The inside of the store will be white with blue edgings very calm and comfortable place to read and learn and grow in Islam. Hmm that is a catchy motto I like it.... *enter that into Business Plan*  I'm hoping to have beautiful Islamic Arches

over each section and the sections sectioned off like a mihrab nitche. Not curvy but like a nook filled with books....we'll see how the design stage goes.
I'll be posting a questionaire for everyone to chime in on ideas in another post and will be bringing back polls to my blog (I miss those don't you?).

It is weird thinking of myself in the Business League. I never thought I'd be wrapped up in Cost of Sales and Profit Margins and all that "biz talk" but here I am wading through it all.  It's liek a sea of info out there and I'm a little fish swimming hard against the currant.

Not only I want to do this business for finacial purposes (hey I gotta eat just liek the rest of the world) but also as my life goal to promote Islamic Literature. Its like a personal Jihad to get Muslims Reading.

Confession: My Drug Addiction

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

I am out of my mind with depression and misery and anxiety, waiting for that next hit. Trying to hold it off as long as possible. Yearning for that mad rush every time I take a bit. "I'm not a heavy user" I claim, yet there I go sneaking hits here and there. Sometimes I've gone a few days to a week without it... was I miserable? You betcha. Does my family realize the extent I go to get my drugs? Not at all. I hide it in different forms. I sneak it into the house under false pretenses. Sometime I even get my rush outside the house. Taking the kids out somewhere and I know they wont notice my purchase. They love their mother's sudden rush of energy and excitement.

I've been hooked on this drug for a long time and this past few weeks I've really had to come to terms with what it does to my body and mind. But naturally the more I realize what is wrong with me the more I crave my drug to ease the pain of stupidity. "Oh I'm a druggie eh? Well that's depressing, I need another hit."

But having found out my weakness has lead me at the same time to a solution to fixing it. It's sure as hell not gonna be easy. After all this drug is EVERYWHERE!!!! SERIOUSLY! You have to spend MORE time and money to AVOID it than it takes just to get it.

It's so common these days that they wrap it up in fancy packages and you can even have it served to you like royalty. Ahhhh, just typing about it is making me want some more NOW!

I'm sure you are wondering what is this drug I'm desperate to get everyday at least seven times a day. I will tell you. I don't fear Police Reprisal for my Confession but I do fear your mocking laughter. Promise me right now you're not gonna laugh at me. This is not some joke or prank I am pulling.

I am seriously addicted and you just might be surprised to know you might also be too......

I am addicted to Sugar. I have a sugar sensitivity to where my body craves it as deeply as any narcotic drug. If I don't get it I have wretched withdrawal symptoms. When I get a hit, I get a sugar high Ecstasy users would dream of. And I found out recently just how much it is ruining my life. Every time I get a bit of sugar my body becomes accustomed to the effects requiring me to need more and more over time until now it's come to the point large doses don't affect me and I have to seek out more high sugar content. A spoonful of pure Brown Sugar, or Honey, or sneaking in a juicy oozy Extra Large Kit Kat Bar with dribbly caramel. I save the KitKat for days when I'm super low. Or when I've saved up enough for my habit a large Iced Coffee with Mint Chocolate flavor with whip cream and caramel on top with a rich super chocolate cake. Arg, I'm drooling on my keyboard now and wishing I had the money to pop up to the Mall...

But there is hope for me and for you too if you are sugar sensitive and call yourself a "Sugar Addict" or "Chocoholic". My friend lent me the book "Potatoes NOT Prozac" and BOY OH BOY! did it open my eyes! This is one book recently I've been reading to battle my depression and to help overcome my mental meltdown I had a few weeks back. We'll discuss the other books I read and things I implemented later lets get back to the Potaters. So I reluctantly and dutifully copied all the info I'd need from the book into my own Food Journal. I've been lazy as all get out to do it properly everyday. But slowly I'm trying to ease the sugars down and be more aware of my body's responses to it. It has been helping.

Along with the other books I've been reading I feel more peaceful and better about life now alhamdulillah. Things are definitely turning around and all is not lost or hopeless. I appreciate your comments and concerns in the last post, it really helped me to know there are so many caring poeple out there.

As you all know I've been working from one project to another during the last five months in hopes to follow my dream and be an Author. God Willed for me to have success this year at last.

With the (IWA) Islamic Writers Association's Poetry and Islamic Short Story Contests back in April I was fueled to enter them. I worked all month on my Islamic Short Story titled Pirate's Peace. It was my first short story and my first Islamic Story. Completing it was an amazing experience in the writing process. I honed my skills in editing and re-writing and enjoying the look of a polished finished project. I took a deep breath and was about to submit my story when a fellow blogger and mentor and most of all a Friend, Sister Safiyyah from Shaalom 2 Salaam, introduced me to IWA. I became a member just in the nick of time to submit my story under the Membership Category.

I was thrilled, not only was my work being considered but it was now on a level of other famous Islamic Authors. Ahem, it was a tad intimidating too. But the IWA is a warm welcoming group and I'm so privileged to be a member of it.

They then announced in May they were going to make an Anthology and members were encouraged to submit more work in Poetry and Islamic Short Stories. I turned back to the drawing board and wrote two new poems, searching deep within for subjects that I love about Islam. Then I had to write two fresh stories. I began one called A Proud Portrait, but the characters needed extra time for development and a sounder plot than it would take to write in half a month, so I left it be for now realizing a better story later would be better than an unpolished one now. I worked meanwhile on another story called Real Meaning of Ramadan. I finished it and got it polished just in time for the deadline and happily sat back with a sigh having completed three poems and two short stories in two months.

I thought now, I can relax a little, work on some organizing in my house, you know the old spring cleaning everyone puts off for "tomorrow". When in June the IWA announced it wanted Artists to make interior illustrations for the Anthologies. Oh how I bit my lip, finger hovered over the button to reply. I was no professional artist. Sure my family liked my work but would I have the confidence and willpower to start and finish and professionally edit my own art work? Time kept ticking and I realized my chance to feature another of my talents was about to slip away and did as I usually do and jump in with both feet. I signed myself up to make 6, yes six, designs. The format was black and white which I had never done before except in sketching, but I loved the look of black and white designs.

I spent the next few weeks researching every aspect in how to achieve the clearest black and white drawings and then bought several different pens and markers to achieve the looks I wanted. Everything came together fluidly over the next three months. I used every available moment of spare time to complete them. With two small kids I'm sure many of you are laughing, what spare time? But sometimes it was one day, make one line, the next day have time for a quarter of the page, another day to finish it off, then following day would get me another two lines. But I learned a lot about pacing myself and when to put in that extra push for time. Some days I'd discourage and would think I couldn't do SIX! IN TIME! But I'd remember how good it felt finishing off my first Short Story.

Every drawing of the six was so uniquely different with a different artistic talent to master; the flow of clothing, the minute details, the geometric angles I hadn't made since 10th grade geometry class. It was amazing the techniques I found I could do.

Now I submitted my last design in August and took a really deep breath. I had indeed done it. It had taken five months of work but well worth it for what I learned about myself and my talents.

I especially realized unlike many artists I am NOT into painting as much as I am into drawing with marker or crayon. I like making those bold black lines. My next idea as an artist is to try Stained Glass designs with first bold colors per pane then perhaps textured or mixed colors per pane. I want to experiment with my oil pastels as they were my favorite long ago. Also perhaps a nice set of markers or colored pencils would do for the interior colors. We will see what the coming year brings for me.

But I do give myself permission to think differently and be different than what people box and label others with. We all have inner talents and we should strive to hon them not to blindly copy what the rest of the world does. My flair with a paint brush is okay but not brilliant, so there is no reason I should force myself to use that medium in my future art.

Lessons well learned by time and devoted energy.

So stay tuned for my announcements of when the two Anthologies will be published and I will officially be an Author and an Artist.

T-H-E-O-R-Y

Means someone's thoughts that are not yet FACT.

It is Darwin's theory of Evolution NOT Darwin's FACTS on Evolution. Yet everyone treats it as facts and forces us to learn it in school where Creationism is not allowed.

I spent a number of years as an Atheist studying Darwin's works and held great admiration for what he achieved with his life and was set to stick my Darwin Fish on my car when i first owned one.

There were number of questions though that I never found answers to. Answers that the "Great" Darwin could not answer. Some Questions for the curious like:

Why if we descended from Monkeys/chimps are their STILL monkeys and chimps that have not evolved? Surely they would have long ago changed too. What about all the other animals that have not evolved over the centuries and are still very similar to it's original?

Also the ever present, What was there before the BIG BANG? How did it "randomly" spark? There have been many THEORIES about it but nothing that holds water for long unless, get this, YOU JUST BELIEVE. Yes, you have to BELIEVE in Darwinism to just accept that molecules and atoms randomly sprung together to create this ordered and well maintained universe. It's a leap of Faith in science.

One I no longer share. Alhamdulillah. Don't get me wrong I DO understand that some animals and some things change with time just like a river carving it's way through the Grand Canyon. But I do not believe WE HUMANS started out from monkeys/chimps. The river remains a river, the rock of the canyon remains rock. They each change a little but are THE SAME...It has been clear from my studies on Islam in these matters that Allah created Adam and he was huge compared to us. And in Jannah we will be given back larger bodies. So I do see things from two sides really kinda a blend of Darwin/Creation. I believe Allah created everything with set scientific rules. As things reproduced and changed slowly it is by HIS WILL and PLAN. Take my husband and myself and our children, each child looks exactly like half of each of us. They are the blending of two distinctly different races of HUMAN. They will later reproduce with different features creating completely different people with measurements different from me and my husband. These are known facts. But they will remain shorter or taller examples of HUMANS not anything else.
Now I have seen some deeply inbred people with thick brows and chunky heads that if dressed in a monkey suit could pass for monkey or neanderthal but yet they remain human and if married to someone of lighter browed, higher foreheaded person, would produce different children etc... my point of all this is though we humans do change looks and style depending on location or breeding patterns we still remain human and I truly believe we always HAVE been all the way back to Adam when he was Created by Allah. After all Allah created the other forms so why should Human be any more difficult? We have a different soul perhaps but that is another Post to ponder on. The point is that no one on this earth is the gigantic portions of Adam because of the way we've changed but none of us is any closer to changing into a different species.

So a few years after becoming Muslim I realized I cannot BELIEVE the theory of Darwin and although I totally BELIEVE Allah's Creation, I do see some Middle Ground I think scientist should focus on to improve knowledge instead of fighting all the time.

{By the way I do know all the Darwin sided points about the old "Who created God stuff" after all I used to battle Christians on it long ago so don't bother to fight it out with me ok. I'm just putting out my THEORY of ALL of Creationism and PART of Darwin.}

Show Face or Save Face?

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

My Adventures in Tucson had a funny post about Authors and their faces on the backs of books.

For me I do not like their faces on the backs, whether large or small. But especially hate the large photos. I do like them on the inside of the book in the back. Yet sometimes they certainly surprise you how the author looks doesn't match with the image in your head. But with their faces on the back every time you shut the book you are taken a bit out of fantasy zone that half this book is an advertisement venue for the author. As I said in comment to Advn. in Tucson "It's kinda like watching a movie in the theater with the lights on." You can get into the movie plot but you keep getting distracted by the guy three rows down picking his nose then sticking his hand into the popcorn he shares with his friend. I.E. Reality Intervenes.
But it got me wondering, what about Muslim and Muslimah Authors? Do they put their pictures in their books? First point of course is some people believe photos are haram of people, lets not get into that. If that is your opinion ok. For those that view people pictures as ok think about this:
You just read a fabulous Science-Fiction book by made-up-author Lacy White. You reach the back after a satisfying ending and there is a color photo of a middle aged Muslimah white convert with a lovely green hijab that matches her eyes. She is smiling a beautiful yet modest writer's smile. What do you think of?
Firstly are you surprised that this Sci-Fi book which had nothing to do with Islam was authored by a Muslim?
Are you surprised she's a hijabi in the picture?
Do you think she is supporting the role that we Muslimahs can be great writers?
Or do you think her wearing hijab means she should NOT be putting her face all over the world and into the hands of non-mahram men?
Do you think she should not be smiling in case some weird man becomes attracted to her and starts stalking her?

What would Muslims and Non-Muslim's reactions be to a picture of just a black swathed niqabi picture for the Author Picture. Or even dare I say a fully burka swathed photo. Some might say the alter is pointless but is it? You know that this author is a burka wearing muslimah and come to some conclusions about her by her writing and what she is wearing, one thing is for sure though there is that shock by a non-muslim that what they read was written by THIS!

For current Muslim and Muslimah authors out there do you put your picture on your books? What do you write about yourself in the Author Descriptions? What do you feel about your fellow authors who choose to do the opposite from what you feel?

I had thought of this question a long time ago when I was first putting hijab. I thought when I authored a book, should I put my picture of me in hijab? Should I wear colored hijab? Should I smile? Should I let my eyes sparkle? Should I leave off the picture? Should I mention in the author description I'm a Muslim Convert. Especially with a name like mine writing Islamic Fiction it might be seen as odd and surely someone would want to know who the heck is this Brandy person doing talking about Islam. For non-Islamic Fiction would it be a turn off for readers to know you're Muslim? Would they stop buying your books? Some perhaps afraid of becoming brainwashed by your subtle words encouraging Islam (you know secret Islamic conspiracy messages).

What are your views on this issue?

Accidental Break

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

It was weird feeling not having Internet for a while. I'm used to checking in twice daily to see if someone posted something new or to blog or to do something online like research something ANYTHING!!! Not having that was a big wake up call about other things i could be doing lol.

By the way I finished writing my Short Story for the contest and edited and all that. It was crazy trying to keep it less than 2000 words. I added in descriptions of costumes and meanings of the beautiful names I had researched then when it came down to editing IT ALL GOT CUT OUT so i was a bit miffed at the process. But say if it was a 5000 limit I'd have a much more descriptive story. Now I just need someone to proofread it to catch any errors. ANY TAKERS?

Obey Thy Husband

My husband calls me up and I'm sleeping... I'm expecting him to say "Please before I get home can you have this or that done in the house" when he surprises me!

"Is it possible for you to do some landscape designing today? I want you to make a new house design by Maghrib to submit to a possible client."

Woooo HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(by the way i was looking on google for a good pic for this post and typed in obedient and found this amazing plant that perfectly ties in with my landscape designing and duty to my husband: The Obedient Plant [Physostegia Virginiana] amazing, apparently it's bendable and stays how you bend it.... hmmm do you think Muslim men are gonna start growing these?)

I'm a good wifey and I'm gonna obey my beloved Hubby. Yessir! I will devote my entire time from now til Maghrib on fulfilling this difficult obligation.

Erm... does that mean I still have to feed the kids?

I feel it in my Bones

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

The above quote comes from the Movie "Peter Pan" (the Jerry Brockheimer (sp!) one). [Which is on tonight(wed. 8or9pm) on MBC3 so don't miss it! It's beautifully done!]

I was washing dishes, scrubbing the nearly dried chicken blood out of a cup, thinking about how I should have done the dishes earlier, you know after I drained the dumb, yet later tasty, chicken, and thought more about my procrastinations...

This line of thinking led me to my writing career...erm or the lack there-of... and the Writing Contest by IWA that I posted about before. Now the Poetry part No problem for me. I know it will take just one morning or evening of pure focus to grasp something worthy of entry. But the Short Story Part is calling to me. It really is. I've only written a short story twice and though my teachers liked it, it was hard for me not to go on and on and stray from the short path. But this is a challenge to write not only a SHORT story but it has to be Islamically based. I've been wracking my brain all month thinking of what kind of storyline I could shorten from my box of story ideas. The thought of trying to make something short has my creativity in a freeze. It's like the word SHORT was AKA for direct flight to the top of Alaska, no return tickets allowed.
But as I was rinsing and admiring my clean cup (and all the other 76 pieces of dishware resting in my sink) and placing it gently into it's allotted drying location I felt it suddenly seep through my bones...
no not the brackish water...
the urge to write.

To hold a thick brand new notebook full of lined blank pages and a brand new pen full of red or green ink and invent new characters doing new things and the endless struggle with plot.
I was suddsing a plate with a silly grin on my face.
Sure I could do this, why not?
After all I practically type 2000 words a day on blogland between posts and comments... and it IS ~SHORT~ therefore I don't have to put my entire career on the line in making decisions about it.

So I've now resolved I want to write a short story and submit it into the IWA contest.
OOOoohhh did ya'll get shivers or was that just me?

Hmm sooo... now that I'm committed....lets see first things first.... how long is 2000 words? Hmm by my meager estimates around 3-4 Word Doc pages?

Ok that's not too bad an undertaking...

Now topic.. topic.... hmmmmm
ok obviously about Islam...

what is a topic everyone loves about Islam? Something that touches people's hearts?
Convert stories. Uplifting Iman. Charity... Hmm ok gotta incorporate those....

Now setting... extreme settings...people's faith is always tested in extreme settings: Arctics, Jungles, Deserts, Sea... places where you have to be alone mostly and rely on Allah.

Hmmm the sea is calling to me.... perhaps that is because I'm in a piratey mood this month.

OOooooOOoooo inspiration just struck! Did you hear that loud sound? That was the sound of a gold brick entering my bank account...

Hmm now the question is should I share my progress and Ideas online or will someone pirate them and make their own short story and upstage mine in submissions?

I need to go buy a Pen....

Nudist Colony in Islam?

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

(Thank you to Habayeb for pointing the article to my view and kindly not bothering to post about this so that I could. Thanks for the leftovers of our idea think tanks at 2am. Hehehe.)
Some people think that we should be able to return to our natural born state of nudity. After all we aren't born with clothes and many say before Adam and Eve disobeyed Allah they were nude. So we should strive to be like them. Many believe that the natural way is the only way and clothed people are deluded. They even go as far as to deny beards and body hair.
In Islam we are far removed from this mentality. We are ordered to clothe ourselves. There is a minimum each sex must follow.

Men must clothe themselves inside the house with at least their loins covered but preferably more. Depending on whom on has in the house like children. Mostly inside and out all madhabs agree that a man must be covered from the navel to the knees. Many clothes made for men do not meet this requirement. Short shorts or even long shorts but they rest on the hips and don't properly cover the navel area front and back. If this is the case of men's clothes you buy it is obligatory upon you to also add a shirt that covers the navel. The pants cannot be tight either showing the lines of the body. Like spandex biker shorts.... *averts eyes...*
Women must clothe themselves Outside from head to toe covering everything but the hands and face. Without showing shape, color, transparency. Inside she may wear what she pleases and what pleases her husband but in front of people like family and children she must cover also between the navel and knees. Which means no miniskirts and daisy duke shorts around the kiddies. There are differences on opinions as to how much of her chest and arms she must cover around different people inside the house. I'm not going into that.

The point is unless there is necessity from illness or extreme poverty there is not to be nudity inside the house even. Even when having relations with the spouse it is recommended to keep the blanket over you both so the shaytan and jinn do not watch. We are given awrahs to protect and to take care of.
It may seem all lovey earthy wonderful to imagine a world where people could walk totally free naked without sin or bad thoughts or fear of harm but this is not a perfect sinless world and thus I do not believe any place exists even nudist colonies where they can live like this. Even nudists can give each other judging looks inside their heads. They can show off in their own ways or covet someones private areas secretly. Maybe one man compares his wife to the neighbor's and prefers the neighbor. No society is without problems.
Allah Knows our natures and has ordered us with clothing for our protection. Protection not only from each other but from the elements. Maybe I haven't googled enough about nudists but I haven't found nudist colonies in Alaska. We need clothes to maintain our body temperatures.
While researching this article I had to avert my eyes A LOT. One thing I found funny though is that many of these nudist wear SHOES.... why? to protect their feet... sorry but to me this smacks of hypocrisy. If you need shoes to protect your feet from harm don't you also need clothes to protect your body from harm!
Some people it really doesn't faze them a bit to be nude and that is their problem but when you walk around nude you have to realize you're harming other's eyes! I read an article in GULF NEWS about a man who went for a stroll around Dubai NAKED! People called the cops and they took him to the mental ward to be questioned. He might have been mentally unstable speaking only German. But how many people do you see on beaches everywhere who for the sake of swimming strip down to one or two pieces of small cloth and claim they are dressed. Perverts descend to check them out. "Oh how DARE you look at me in my bikini! Shame on you!" Excuse me? SHAME ON YOU! Put some freakin clothes on! These same people are the ones calling the cops on a nudist. Hello to a Muslim bathing suits are pretty darn close to nudism. Have some respect for yourself people and don't sell yourself for free to perverts. You're giving them a free peep show.
On the other hand Muslims who cover themselves are saying loud and clear, it's my body and if you aren't gonna marry me and take care of me and be my loving support, then you don't get to see ANYTHING. Alhamdulillah. So I don't see an Islamic Nudist Colony cropping up anytime soon, and God Forbids if it does, it's a sign that the Day is near. Prepare yourselves.

Choose one?

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

Think hard:
"Hypothetical Question":

There is a new law in all first world and second world countries stating you can only have one child. In the next 72 hours armed government officials will be coming to everyone's house and taking all but one of your children. Unless they were born as twins. Which must be documented.

Do you choose to be a law abiding citizen and give up your children? If so how do you choose which one to keep?

Do you choose to run from the law and take your children and family away where no government officials will find you? If so where will you go and how will you keep the gov from finding you?

Don't make fun of anyone who chooses something different that what you'd pick ok. This is open to all points of view. Let's hear them....

Need your Help: Choose Best Picture!

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

I'm making a new picture for my sidebar but I really can't choose which one would look the best. So I though why not let me beloved readers choose! You can either use the poll above for anonymous choosing or use the comment to let me know. OR BOTH! Just let me know either way. You have until March 15th. Then I'm going to choose the one with the highest votes.

By the way I'm not nationalistic in any way nor do I believe America is better than any other country in the world. When choosing a name for my blog I wanted something that reflected who I am. i AM an American. i AM Muslim. i AM a writer. So the flag is just a fun thing not something I take wholly seriously. So please don't get all uppity about it lol. It's just a fun thing to do.

So without further blathering... I present you the choices: (numbered for easy reference)

Thanks for voting!

"That's Bloggable!"

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

The beauty of the Blogs that I enjoy most is being able to write something that affects my emotions and sharing it with others instantaneously. Many times during my week I run into something and tell someone or say to myself "That's Bloggable!". Meaning I just had an interesting experience and I'm sure someone else in the world would find it interesting too.

For me personally I don't always get the time to write in my novels and I can't even have time to prepare to think about the characters and switch modes from real life to fantasy. But with blogs I can just stretch my writing brain, using words to describe something not newsworthy but still important to me. I also like the fact no matter what time of day it is you can see immediate responses because people all over the world are on at different times.

Without blogging I'm sure my brain would be down to three worded sentences that I use daily. No-no don't touch. Go get shoes. Gimme the spoon. You want num-num? I love you.

I really enjoy having a way to link to the world and discuss a myriad of topics that affect us all. Sometimes people post things that inform me or open my eyes to a different way of life. Mostly though I enjoy the posts that inspire me to better myself and my life and make me realize that not everything is always as difficult as it seems. These are the post I TOO aspire to write but again part of the fun of writing as I please is writing about whatever I please no matter the audience.

Some have commented before that I blog such an odd assortment but that just comes from suddenly me seeing or feeling something and saying "That's Bloggable!" So what inspires you to make a blog topic?

Hate Nail Polish but LOVE IT?

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

So we all love Nail Polish and yet we hate it because we know only an hour after applying it (depending on time of application) we will have to take it off to make wudu and pray.
Polish is a barrier that prevents water from touching the WHOLE of the nail. It is not valid to only take off one little chip in the corner and call that letting water reach the nail. it must reach the WHOLE nail. Even on the edge by the skin where it is hard to remove the polish.
I spotted Muslimah2Muslimahs Post about Nail Polish Dye and that got me thinking about a way to just peel off the poish when you want to make wudu. When I was a kid I had this barbie or something nail polish that just peeled off. Me and Nicolette used to just paint and peel and paint and peel over and over again. But so I wondered if they had it in other colores besides candy red. I found this website Honey Bee Gardens All Natural Products. They have a peel off nail polish that might be benefitial to stock up on. Next time you wanna go glam you can do so then when making wudu just peel it off throw it away and wash up. They come off with soap and water too so while you make wudu if some parts don't peel fully it will go away anyways. It's water soluable. $5.99 per bottle and they have 6 colors so far. Awesome Products for Muslims!

1 Year Blogger Anniversary

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

Ya Allah! I almost missed it! I was waiting anxiously the day my 1 year blogging anniversary came and I almost forgot all about it!

I have never been through something more rewarding online than Blogging. I used to have LiveJournal, took off on MySpace, but it is here in Blogland I have found happiness. The journey surely wasn't easy. There were days I couldn't think of a single thing to write then other days (as my dearest closest bloggers can attest to) I blog like 6 posts in one day. I'd give an evil laugh MUUAAHHAhahahahahaa as I forced my friends to keep up with my posts as they screamed SLOW DOWN!! Hehehee.
But one of the biggest lessons I learned last year was dealing with Private Blogs. Man the Protected Passworded Posts and Private Blogs and everyone vieing to get in. Crazy stuff. Don't get me wrong I understand the need for them, for venting or being more open. In fact my past Private Blog "Truth Hurts" was a very special thing for me. I met some really awesome women and got to know them much better. They gave me some awesome advice when I was really needing it. They listened to my rants with a good ear and put me in my place when I was out of line. But I also realized these blogs dark side. Sometimes you fall into the trap of constantly complaining. Whining. Or making drama. It got to the point I became depressed by my own blog. Not the women in it, no. It was the fact that I'd dwell all day on what to blog about and be thinking negatively all day about how pissed off i was about something or someone. This made me more agitated and upset. How am I supposed to sooth my nerves when I'm going batty in my head? Enough was enough. I was not going to let a few gigabytes get me down. No Blog had control over me. I deleted it with hardly a backwards glance. Sure I miss ranting, it's kinda fun. But I know if the need ever really arises and i need advice I have a long list of sisters who I can rapidly e-mail and get support. For that I'm very grateful.

So when the time came and I wanted to make a new blog (that's my ADD, create and don't complete) I thought, what can I do that is Positive? What does every Blogger Love? What is something that will benefit Islam AND sisters? Well I realized every Blogger loves their own blogs. Every Blogger is happy to find more readers. And pretty much every blogger wants to find more people like themselves. Thus the invention of ALL MUSLIMAH. It was thrilling to start! It's been complicated to keep up though LOL. I literally have 52 pages on WORD filled with line after line of blogs to sort and go through and see if they are really Muslim Females. Some days I'm like hmm perhaps I'll get ONE entered today, then other days I get really motivated and enter like 20! I try to give preference to those that e-mail me over my running list. Just this week I was like staring at the blog and happy I made it but dreading even opening my 6 websites to get things listed. Then I clicked on a follower's name and found something unexpected. Someone confused about Islam. Someone not knowing where to go or who to talk to about her confusion. We in Blogland know how hard it is to find new awesome blogs and keep up with them. SO the fact that through following my ALL MUSLIMAH Blog she was able to directly access dozens of Sisters (all of whom have wonderful blogs) who could help her be stronger on her spiritual journey almost made me weep out of thankfulness that Allah let me make this blog. It's Humbling for sure. Allah is using me to help others, alhamdulillah. So this made me very determined to enter more sisters for her and others to find. I think I broke a record yesterday. My daughter was even whining "Oh not on the computer again!!!" I was like "I have to help the Muslims sweety! We have to find each other so we can be stronger! Don't you want to find lots of Muslim friends? Well I'm trying to help them all over the world." She allowed me to continue. Even my son has a routine for my blogging. Every afternoon I'm sitting here using my breastfeeding time to do work while he takes care of his business. I just prop him up against the arm of the armchair and he just falls asleep drinking his milk as I go through blog links to add. Before i know it he's asleep for his evening nap and I then have more free time to enter names while teaching my daughter some workbook homeschooling. For him computer is nap time.

As I'm meeting new sisters everyday sometimes I come across real gem of ideas. I see often "we should do this online" or "I wish someone would start this up so we could all benefit" then it's abandoned because no one has time to start up something like that even though it would be a great source of happiness for many. So after hearing an idea and not seeing the person with the idea do anything, I've again taken the initiative and have made a new blog. Sure it's under construction but I think it can help those who need it. Of course I'll blog about it soon in more detail. The point is though sometimes you just have to DO IT and TRY IT. If it fails you can always delete it, no problem or give it to someone else to run for a while.
But as I said before Blogging has been incredible.
I have never imagined when I started this to find Writing Support I would cover so many topics and meet so many different people. I've had my blindfold taken off and seen how the real ulema is out there. Sure there are the problems with people abusing others unlawfully and having their rights oppressed by others. But more and more I'm seeing a larger more beautiful picture. People standing together across the world and reaching out beyond their means to support others. Some with finances, some with words, others with calls, letters, presents, meetings. It's just amazing. Across this whole big world we are able to touch someones life. I could never have dreamed I'd meet the people I've met. Some of them I wish I could just fly to right now and have a cup of coffee with!!!

Sometimes you wonder where I come up with my unexpected ideas well look no further than your own screens. You are my inspirations. You strong awesome people out there, that don't feel strong, yet are, in so many ways undescribed. For you I keep blogging, for you I set aside time in my life. Time well spent.

Tagged: Islamic Survey

Wrote: American Muslima Writer |

Lazeena at Is there food on my Niqab? posted a cool Islamic Survey and I HAVE to do it too :)
You all are free to copy and paste on your blogs with your own awesome answers.

***
Name: Brandy A. Chase
Age: 24
Location: Al-Ain, U.A.E., Middle East, Earth, Milky Way, Universe, Creation of Allah ... didn't you all used to have fun saying all that as a kid?
Background: American: Scottish and mixed Euro.
Spouse (if so, name and background): Husband, Lebanese
How long have you been married? 6 years
Kids? Daughter 4, Son 1.4
Are you a revert? Yup. AKA Convert for those that aren't familiar with the convert/revert debate. Been Muslim for 7 years now.. wow have I?!?!?! Masha'Allah. Doesn't always feel like that long but on the other hand it feels like FOR EVER........
Have you been to Hajj or Umrah? NO :( Insha'Allah when my kids are teens I'll get the chance as I posted before.
How many masjid have you been to? Masha'Allah Lazeena knew the names of all her Masjids. Sadly I dont. In Tucson, AZ there was only one and by the time i left they hadn't built the second though they were raising funds for it and I gave all I had at that time which was like $7.64 so maybe I bought like four bricks alhamdulliah. Then in Tempe, AZ I went to the beautiful Masjid there. While driving around in Phoenix, AZ I went to two or three other ones. Then of course in Lebanon I've been to let's see..... 10 or 11 different masjids (they are plentiful masha'Allah). Now in UAE of course I've been to the Shiek Zayed one in Abudhabi and The Jumairah one in Dubai and here there and in between I've been to 18 approx. SO TOTAL 34 approx. Masha'Allah.
Have you ever been involved with a masjid? Yes Masha'Allah, in Tucson I regularly attended the girls saturday classes then later when they stoped I used to go and clean the masjid cause I didn't like the way the non-muslim cleaners were doing it, i still can't beleive they hired non-muslims to clean it!!!! Why not employ a muslim couple and give them baraka!!! Then in Tempe I'd help out here and there but they had so many volunteers and I lived far off in Mesa with no car so it was tough to get there as often as others. So far here and in Lebanon I haven't worked witht he masjid but in Lebanon they had classes AT masjids. But I LOVE MASJIDS MASHA'ALLAH.
Who are some of your favorite lectures by? My fellow bloggers! :) ok ok ya'll want name dropping right?!?! Well of course Hamza Yusuf. Shiekh Abdullah (Leb.), my father-in-law is a Shiekh and give us a good lecture now and then, but other than that sorry I don't get to hear many lectures but I really do like them when I do get the chance to hear them.
Who are some of your favorite recitors? *blank look* erm.... as I don't understand the Arabic I just listen to people reciting it in public as in Ramadan,or my Husband or his family. On TV I see them doing recitations and some are very beautiful but I hate those that are SINGING QUR'AN. RECITE people not SING! My mother-in-law has a sweet voice masha'Allah.
Some of your favorite Islamic books? *my own books I'm writing*, Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh, Intructional, Inspirational, The Idiots Guide to Islam, The Choice by Ahmad Deedat, The Summery by Shiekh Abdullah, and more recently I've been hearing about Muslim authors like myself who have written awesome books yet I personally haven't had the chance to buy and read them. Sister Saffiyah at Shalom 2 Salam has some great short stories and Poems on her blog (love you too!). Many sisters out there have some nice Stories on their blogs too that I haven't had time to read yet though saw they are there.
Decribe your most memorable Eid: It WILL BE IN THE FUTURE when I get to finally attensd my first Eid prayer. I've never in 7 years been able to go to one..... no one will take me. But on the bright side each E'id has been special esp. when you have lots of family to visit. My favorite was this past E'id. It felt special because I go to do so much and visit so many and I'll blog soon about it insha'Allah.
When did you first start fasting? Well I missed my first fasting 2001 as a new muslim because I didn't know about it NO ONE TOLD ME! But when I moved to Tempe/Mesa 2002 I was able to do it and Masha'Allah it was so beautiful. i even stayed at the masjid on and off the last 10 days and learned to memorize my first Surah.
When did you start hijab? I converted at the begining of the school year 2001-2002 of my 12th grade. I wore it the first day of my conversion for about a few weeks until school started then took it off. Then half way through school year in Jan. or Feb. I put it back on. Then later by a year I had to take it off for finding a job (though still wore full length clothes). Once I got the job i put it back on. Didn't take it off since. Alhamdulliah.
What's your usual outift like when you go out? Usually wide pants and long sleeved shirt, or if a skirt then black bloomers and long dark socks under the skirt jsut in case I fall-- under a black abaya with annoying velco closure on the shoulder and snaps in three places along the front and the middle one is broken and has been replaced by a hijab pin and the bottom one is always popping open and I'm always closing it, and a hijab. Either square and triangled or long wide rectangle.
What do you like about blogging? EVERYTHING! The conceptulizing of posts, the writing, the comments ....erm where has my comment rate gone? I must not be doing good enough posts lately or advertising so well.....lol.... the exchanging of views with fellow sisters (and brothers), the finding of info about the Ummah, making friends all over the beautiful world.
Describe your first feelings wearing hijab---
Hijab: I was sooo excited. I was gonna be Muslim and I was gonna wear it on my head to show I'm muslim and everyone was gonna SEE it and know that I've chosen Islam. Masha'Allah. Sometimes we forget that excitement in the Middle East because people don't really stare at us to make us remeber why we wear it. We just toss it on and go.
Abayah: I too was relieved! It was sooo much easier to work with when you wanted to go places and be fully covered. Yet the trouble I had with it was trying to wear full clothes under it that cover your body just as if you aren't wearing the abaya for the parts that show when you move (the ankles, the wrists, the body in case it falls open). I call it a Muslim coat. It's like one more layer over your "normal" clothes.
Niqab: I loved the Niqab! It was so wonderful being unseen. I love the look I love the feel I love the texture I love everything except eating in it lol.
How do you pin your hijab? *with pins* hehehehe. ok ok seriously now... the triangle I put TWO pins under the chin (cause they are easy to pop) then one about three inches under that about neck level and the final one at chest level. I'm very carefully to fold the material in as I pin it leaving lots of material IN the pin so taht when it stretches there wont be any gaps in the pin and between pins. It's harder to do but then you're properly covered without worrying all day. The rectangle I put an under scarf over the hair and a full amirah hijab if it's see through material and then leaving about shoulder length on one side start the wrap around once then twice and pin straight pins on the temples usually two each side through ALL LAYERS. Although i do love the look of a fancy flower pin at the temple too. I use lots of pins to make sure that baby sticks. i hate re-doing it every few minutes.
Highlight the countries you know Muslims from*add any countries you don't see on the list*: Antarctica (who knows Muslims from there!? Masha'Allah!), Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Chechnya, China, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Latvia, Lithoania, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Taiwan, Trinidad, Tobago, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, Yemen, Yugoslavia,
What was on the last prayer mat you made salah on? It's green with yellow and white sections and black of course. it has a large masjid I think in India (no not the taj mahal) on it and it's sooo beautiful and it's the mat I first got when I converted for free by a generous brother masha'Allah.
What's your ideal iftar? Dates, and water, followed by Turkish soup, a few fried cheese rolls on the side, hommos without olive oil, chicken breast on yellow rice with raisins and roasted nuts, with laban mixed with cucumbers and mint on the side, to drink mango or strawberry juice or Vimto (berry juice), then after dinner light mint tea and deserts like baklawa, rice pudding, brownie cakes...erm anything with sugar..... Ya'll did say IDEAL not actual.
What type of adhaan really gets to you? The kind where you can hear one after another starting and they each have distintly different voices and one is so perfect to your ear that you seek it in the middle of the many, And you follow saying after it, and they all end one after another. Masha'Allah.
What's something that annoys you at Jummah: People arriving late. People shoudl strive to reach the Masjid Before the second athan. If they only know the reward of being the first to arrive!
What was the last surah you read? (not recited in salah): in Arabic Ikhlas with my daughter, but in English I read Surah 27: Al Naml (the ants) ayah 44: She[Bilqis, queen of Sheba] was asked to enter the lofty Palace: but when she saw it, she thought it was a lake of water, and she (tucked up her skirts), uncovering her legs. He said: "This is but a palace paved smooth with slabs of glass." She said: "O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul: I do (now) submit (in Islam), with Solomon, to the Lord of the Worlds."
Do you dry yourself after wudu? Though it's disliked yeah I do, When I'm out at the mall or soemthing I dry everything so I can get dressed again without wet feet and face etc. At home I just dry arms if I'm wearing long sleeves and always my face because I wear glasses and it bothers me to pray with water drops on my glasses.
Do you brush your teeth for fajr salah? Funny question lol. I'll be honest most the time i dont' brush before praying but I do rince my mouth plenty with water while I Wudu so it's not sticky and yucky, course i do bruish before I sleep.... if I do notice something strong then I'll brush.
Whats the last Islamic thing you've been involved with? :'-( Waaahhhh nothing! I feel so pathetic! *weep* Just trying to daily get by with my duties. But I guess long term I'm working towards publishing Islamic Books and raise good Muslim family.
What was the last convention you went to? *blink blink* Last? Never been to one. Though I hear a lot of people go for shoping and meeting potential spouses so I never knew what they were for until I heard critisism online about people going for these things and not the lectures and I was like hmm they have lectures? Never heard of that... might be nice to go to some some day....
Have you ever been part of an Islamic matrimonial site? *blushes* Yes.... but it's not how I met my husband so I deleted them.... they CAN be good if used the right way.
hat color is the carpet in the masjid you usually attend? Light Blueish-grey, pretty.
Is the masjid you usually attend separated? Yes the womens is up top and the mens is ground floor. Though unless there is an elevator this is unfair as women have strollers and if handicapped wheelchairs... there should be a section down stairs if thre is no elevator for poeple in need!!!! one terribly planned masjid in Lebanon had get this, up stairs prayer for men and ground floor for men prayer and wudu, down two floors for women prayer and down three floors for main women prayer and wudu. Yes it's a big masjid BUT SOO ANOYING WHEN PREGNANT AND HOLDING A SMALL KID TO WALK DOWN THREE FLIGHTS OF STAIRS TO MAKE WUDU THEN UP ANOTHER FLIGHT TO PRAY THEN UP TWO FLIGHTS TO GO HOME!!!!!!!!! No fair no fair no fair!
Have you ever stood in a minbar? *grin* Yes, I like to walk around the mens section when there is no one there (in tucson and Tempe) because they have the more beautiful side usually and I climbed up the minbar a few times. jsut to see what it's like.
Have you ever washed a dead body before? Not islamically speaking no but I helped my aunt wipe down my Grandmother and change her clothes when she died.
What's the last thing you ate in the masjid? erm, i don't even remeber it was soo long ago because it's makruh to eat and dirty the masjid but I think another sister at the mall masjid was eating cookies and gave me and my kids some and I carefully had a nibble then had a heartattack trying to keep my kids crumbs off the floor....
Where's the strangest place you've seen a Muslim working? I haven't seen persoanlly but I've heard of sisters working in Haram places like bars. Of course I was working at the Movies and people thought that was strange.
Have you ever posted a flier in the masjid? Yes about the Girl's Meetings
Rate your masjid's bathroom: Clean alhamdulliah. Tucson's used to make me angry though because they'd put the mop and cleaning stuff right next in the wudu area and they use it to clean the bathroom floors, hense why they shouldn't use non-muslim cleaners....
Have you ever used a bidet for istinja?:Yes my aunt-in-law had one in her hosue and I tried it out and it was akward and difficult and I prefer the hand held sprayer.
What's the weirdest thing that happened to you in salah? Having to pray holding a baby (which wasn't the weird part), but poeple praying next to me offering to hold the baby for me while I pray {while they pray- or dont pray} Jummah. I'm like erm no! (holding my baby tighter so they couldn't grab her not talking of course) We all came here to pray so worry about yourself!
Isn't it annoying when the imam tells everyone to shut off their cell phones and someone's phone rings in the middle of salah? Yes it's VERY VERY annoying espcially if it's music ringing and suddenly in the middle of sujuud you get "I wanna F- you Nigg*** and get it on with your girl on the floor...." erm yyyyyeahhhh I bet that Brother got a talking to! Sadly sometimes though I forget before going in to pray to turn it off but alhamdulliah no one has called me.
What's some of the best halal food you've had (from a non Muslim country)? Well Ali Baba restraunt in Tucson has great food and in Tempe the Phoneician Cafe restrauint next to teh masjid is yummy.
What was it like when you found out skittles were haram? *spits out skittle..* Skittles are Haram?!?!?! They sell them here in UAE and UAE has banned candy with haram gelatin in them so i thought they are safe..... but Lazeena's answer has made me question now.... I love gellied candies so i have to be careful..... but perhaps UAE has let them because it has halal gelatin? like a pack of usa marshmellows said fish gelatin on the back....
What's something haram that you think most people don't know? That saying or doing something in the catagory of Blasphemy will take you out of Islam and you have to retake Shahada or die as a non-muslim. It's very serious and VERY unknown. You have to carefully study the catagory of Blasphemy and what things cause it. A sister is making a blog as I speak about this I'll link you when it's up. Insha'Allah. May Allah protect us from loosing Islam.
What's the craziest hijabi fashion you've seen? Well it looks silly but also interesting is wearing hats on top of hijabs. I'm sure we could blog five years about this lol.
What did you like about this survey?? Everything was answerable and I didn't have to write "Not applicable, I'm Muslim." Though perhaps someone will asnwer this survey "Not applicable I'm not-Muslim." lol.

Feel free to do it yourself.
